saying goodbye

This week has been very sad in my hometown, as a dear friend, someone loved by all in our small little town, left us.  His passing has called into question all of the shortcomings that we, as his friends and family, committed in not realizing a dangerous situation before it turned tragic.  He is gone now, but will forever live on in our hearts.
My memories of him will remain as the 7-year old smiley boy who teased me in our tap class together, and as the extremely handsome guy who took me to my senior prom.  God speed Jared and rest in peace.  All our love

where is the light?

Is it just me….or were the Fall 2012 Couture shows in Paris a little…….how should I put this…..dour?  I have always been a fan of the optimism and energy that always come with the Spring/Summer shows and this year’s couture showings were dark and dreary and, to be honest, somewhat depressing.  Models came down to runways with crimson red lips slapped into a static frown, or if not, with no recognizable emotion at all.  At least I found a handful of pieces that can cheer me up!

With the Duchess of Cambridge’s 2012 to-date wardrobe expenses recently released to the public, I found a few new outfits that I think she would only make more fabulous.  Is it possible for someone to look that elegant….all the time? :)

I’ve always had a thing for Elie Saab…and totally intend on scoping out his wedding gown collections for Pronovias when it’s my turn down the aisle.  But these glittering ensembles are lovely for after-work functions or festive cocktail parties.   I love that they are neutral, pretty pastels…for fall!
Classic Chanel!  Enough said.
Since her appearance at the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant, there has been no doubt that the Duchess, despite the critics howling about “upstaging”, can rock it in red!  A gorgeous gown by Christian Dior.

There’s is really nothing else that I love more when I get a sweet-toothed craving than an oatmeal cookie.  I’ve tried every store brand I can find and nothing beats a homemade, soft, break-apart-in-your-hands cookie loaded with spices and cinnamon!  This past long weekend I made a huge batch of these, but added in some apples to mix it up and add in a bit of sweet and sour contrast.  Love Love Love :)

love is

Headed off to my dear friends’ Trish and Matt’s wedding this afternoon…so overjoyed to share this special day with you both and your gorgeous son Tyler!  May your life together continue to bring endless joy and never-ending memories! xoxo nikki

Here are the three latest wedding-themed Pinterest images that stuck with me:
{any girl would take having a picture like this over a flawless one of herself any day}
{peach sapphire with rose gold…so interesting and unique…maybe in a different cut…but this is gorg!}
{I vaguely remember having a moment like this myself as a 4-year old flower girl….such a lovely quiet moment}

quiet time

As previously mentioned, last week was a marathon of events and activities that have left me, this week, feeling rundown and somewhat blasé.  While I always consider myself to thrive in the hustle and bustle of the big city, sometimes my mind wanders to what it would be like to like nestled in some quiet little borough somewhere.  Sowing my English roots, my destination of choice for a holiday devoid of any city-related stress would be rural England, somewhere in Surrey or up in North Yorkshire perhaps.   The break taking images captured in the 2005 film version of Pride and Prejudice come to mind instantly.  Where is your “calm” place?

tongue tied

We used to be able to assert the need to speak both English and French on the fact that we live in a country with two official languages.  In today’s global society, even grasping two languages is below average in terms of linguistic skills of the world’s top business people.  Interviews show that top CEOs and officials are now averaging between three and six spoken and written languages in their repertoires.
While I am not completely illiterate in French (I would rank my one-time fluency at an intermediate level now), I kick myself for letting an unfortunate situation with a high school language teacher sidetrack my foreign language education.  I intermittedly dabble in French, Spanish and Italian Teach-Yourself aids (inspired by travels through the European continent), but need to make a more concerted effort to solidify my skills and make my linguistic fortitude a business skill.  Here is a quick list of positives to knowing one (or more) foreign languages in the workplace; so rustle up that dusty library card and hit the books; it could do more than just help you order a coffee in St. Petersburg!Learn another language…
1. To increase global understanding – you cannot truly access and understand, and therefore effectively interact within, another culture without understanding and using its language.
2. To improve employment potential – companies want to compete globally and therefore need to deal with cultures “on their own terms”.  That’s where the multi-lingual business professional comes in.
3. To increase native language ability – becoming more versed in foreign languages increases our understanding and abilities within our own native language.
4. To sharpen cognitive and life skills – aptitude in languages is a direct link to increased mental flexibility and creativity.
5. To appreciate international literature, music and film – as a business and social tool, understanding what actually happened in a performance of La Traviata could lend itself useful when smoozing with your hometown’s Old Guard (usually influential business leaders)

I usually cannot stand the sport of golf…I think it has to do with memories of wanting to watch cartoons as a child, but being denied by my sports-obsessed father because the PGA Tour was on.  As I have grown up, and learnt the value of the sport as a business tool, I have grown to actually enjoy a good day on the green.  Friday was an absolutely gorgous day….not too hot….and a work tournament made for fun in the sun (and some classic goofing off) at Caledon Country Club….putters up!

sailin’

First days of summer mean getting outdoors and taking in the scenery.  Being a bonafide city girl, I love embracing everything Toronto has to offer.  First boat cruise of the year and even a little gentle rain didn’t threaten our evening.  Despite being a work function, tons of fun was had by all…check out that skyline.  I heart this city!

new look

Crazy crazy week…absolutely no time to put together a decent post!  But here is a picture of my newly updated look….it’s been awhile since my hair has been this dark!  This is me at the National Ballet of Canada’s Diamond Gala last night….still in a ballet coma from the amazingness that is that company!  Bravo!

one day soon

I often wonder what life would be like if time and money weren’t a factor in decision-making.  I could spend a lifetime and a dozen fortunes exploring all things French!  But the pragmatist in me has dwindled it down to a simple bucket list of my top ten must-dos.  What’s on your list?
1.  Sip champagne and take in the show at the Moulin Rouge
2.  Squish Muscadet grapes at a winery in the Loire Valley
3.  Go truffle hunting in the Cote de Nuits in Burgundy
4.  Snap shots at the many Arago medallions of the Rose Line on the streets of Paris
5.  Take a typical French picnic (i.e. 2 hour lunch break) on the lawn of Champs de Mars
6.  Be a repeat offender – eat mussels and frites in a café overlooking the bay of Villefranche
7.  Visit Versailles – can’t believe I haven’t been yet – possibly wearing this!
8.  Tell ghost stories while visiting the famously deceased at Pere Lachaise Cemetary
9.  See a play at the Orange theatre in Provence
10.  Visit Monet’s Garden at Giverny
